HER MAJESTY'S JUBILEE CAKE

♦ Months ago tbe firm of Messrs. Gunte In Berkeley Square a*ked permission o Her Majesty to present her with a jubile cake, on the plea that fifty years ago the same firm supplied the inevitable cake at the Coronation. A spaclal stand haa been built for this gigantic cake, and standing on a splendid cloth of crimson plush, it Is certainly a,monument of triumph of the confeotioner'a art. The following description of the jubilee cake may serve to give some idea of its size and appearance. The cake U about 9ft 6in m chcumferenoe, 10ft high, and weighs, without the decorations, over a quarter of a ton , The design represents the crown, guarded by lions, surmounted by a temple bearing figures of Fame and Glory, with trumpets m their hands, heralding the Jubilee to the four quarters of tbe world. Thest again are surmounted by temples crowned by a winged figure of Peace, bearing the crown of Empire; tbe panels of the base embroidered m gold on white satin, and eaoh of which la worth three guineas, bear the Royal monogram, and between them are fagurea m relief representing the four quartets of the world. Medallions between the lions are correct portraits m rellbf of Her Moja&ty and His Royal Highness the Prince Consort at the time of the Royal marriage, 1810; of Her Majeßty m the year 1867 (taken for Canada); of Her Majesty at the present time aB Queen and Empress of India. The other medallions bear the names of the principal portions of the Empire. The border round the top of the actual c»ke, which is particularly well executed, represents a garland of rose, Bharnrock, and thistle.
