WORKS C MMITTEE i The Worko Committee reported an • follows t — Diversion of River : In refe- , rence to Mr Lancaster'a application, (he Worka Committee examined the riv orbed immediately bftlow the traffio bridge, 1 and wo have also made a farther eiamlna--1 tion and taken levelß for the i r^cticibtlity i and coat of diverticg the present main [ stream now attacking the otutern banks. ! There io another ohannel rather deeper . though narrower, running para'leJ, bat more m the medial line of the river-bed, 1 into which the present main stream or a considerable portion of the stream ein be diverted along two separate channels, requiring of course to be deepened. The upper channel nearest the bridge is the shorter, and would need to be deepened for a distance of about three and a-half ohainu, The lower and larger channel wonld be required to be aoooped a greater or less depth, a length of atout 10 to 11 chains . The first channel being the shorter would have tho advantage of lees shingle to be removed, but on ihe other band it is not so direotly In the line of the flow m the upper part of the main ohannel. The staff would have to be deposited on one Bide, and a good proportion of the scooping would have to be done m the water. The lower channel, lfmadetiaaimllar width to the upper one, would take nearly four times the quantity of stuff to be shlftod, but has the advantage of both aides of the ohannel being available for the deposit of the spoil, Nearly all the work can be done m the dry, and tho ohannel would be more direct, and therefore more likely to booome permanent, The oost depends on the width of the artificial ohannel, and we do not think much benefit would be gained by a less width than 30 feet. We have calculated for a width of from 30 feet to 40 feet, according to the contour of the ground, and estimate tho Teßpeotive cost at £16 for the upper and £40 for the lower channel. This would not Include any artificial dam of Band bagp, which would be at lo^at £20 extra, but we hardly recommend this if not found absolutely neoeaaary, Cr Williamson thought it would be well to leave the olauae m abeyance. Any work done m tho river-bed probably would be nentraliaed bp the next freah, and it would bo better to undertake protection of a permanent nature for the banks. The Council agreed with Or William. B MRD OF HEALTH. Tho report of the Committee appointed to connider thia matter, and whioh had been held over from last meeting till all tho local bodioe written to had replied, was adoptod. Cr H, Prledlander said that the next step would bo to call a meeting ct the local bodies to deviso the beat means for attaining the object m view, and it was reaolvod on hia motion that these Boards be auked to appoint a Committee to consult with a Committee of the Council on tho 6tb prox,, with a view to forming a oombinod Board of Health. VAOINOY. The Returning Officer wui iastructed to take Eitepa tj fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Cr Roberts, PAYMENTS. Payments amounting to £125 5a 63 were panied for payment, and the Council adjourned.
