4 — Auckland, Augast 4. Whilst a young girl of fourteen named Emma Smith was preparing dinner for the fsnrly, who were absent, her olotheß caught fire. Without a moment's hesitation fiho rushed out and jumped into a well, from whioh she was afterwards rescued, when abe waa found to be -severely burned, John Phillips, charged with setting fire to the Royal Hotel, was brought; up before Mr Northcroft, R.M. , at Hamilton, to-day, and remanded. It is understood that the Seamen's Union have bo far arranged matters that they will have two or three boats rnnning m opposition to the Northern Company within a fortnight or three weeks. Wellington, August 4. A Masterton man, named James Stevenson, has been killed by a tree falling on him. (f^The Premier leaves for the South to* morrow.
