MURDERED ON THE EVE OF MARRIAGE.
A tragio affair is reported from Preston. Alfred Sowery, twenty-four, pawnbroker's assistant, at Preston, murdered his sweetheart, Annib Kelly, nineteen, by shooting her m the head with a revolver, and theu repeatedly tried to commit suicide with the same weapon. The couple who have been keeping company for bix months went to the Clarendon Temperance Hotel and ordered dinner. While this was being prepared, Sowery placed the revolver olo.e to Kelly's right temple and fired. Sbe died almost immedUtely, but though the young man tried repeatedly to shoot hlmpeif none of tbe other five barrels would explode. Kelly was laundres. at a leading hotel, and was a nstive of Ireland,
