TEMPERANCE MEETING.
A public meeting, under the auspices of th.B New Zealand Allianoo for the suppression of the liquor traffic, took pace a*, the Oddfellows' Hall, last night, when Mr T. W, Glover, travelling agent of tho organization, delivered a mo&t forcible address. There was a capital attendance, of a thoroughly representative character ; the chair being occupied by G^orgo J»meßn", E-q. After a brief prayer had been effort d by Rev. A. M. Beattie, the ohalrman, m a few words, introduced Mi Glover, who, for about an hour, deaH, m an exceptionally interesting manner, with the objtiCts of the Alliance. Their platform waa the total suppression of tho i quor traffic by the vote of the people, and to obtain this result it w&s n-'oeaeaiy that tha subject should come t) the front during the ensuing elections, and thit strenuous efforts be put forth to influence the legislature to paes an Act confe.rin : the right on the people, Mr G over vory ably combated the ♦•compensation" question, and gave some striking instances of the comfort and prosperity existing m localities where the drink traffic was pro hioited, not only In the United Statas and England, but m New Zealand itself. A vote of thanks, proposed by Rev. E A. Scott and seconded by Mi J W. Sawle, was accorded to Mr Glover for his powerful advocacy of temperance principles, and a similar compliment to the Chairman was carried with acclamation. A united choir, under Mr Gamble, with Mr Wildsmith at the organ, sung several of Sankoy's melodies during the evening. After the public meeting, a large number of names were given m as Bubsoribem to the Alliance, atd the following; gentlemen were eleoted as a local Commictea : — Rev B. A, Scttt, Andrew Orr, T. M. Jones, J. W. Sawle, J. Oaygill (Tinwald), D, H. Brown (Chairman), and 0. loxou (Secretary),
