THE SEAMEN'S STRIKE.
DuNapjtf, Jnly 25. In reference to the dispute between the Northern Company and the Seamen's Union, it should be stated that the negotiations are being conducted between the head office of the Union at Port Chalmers and the Company. Ihe Executive Committee forwarded the following telegram last week to the Company : — " The Federated Seamen's Union regret 4he present complication, and, with a view to avoiding a conflict between capital and labor, with loeeea attendant to each, make the following proposal ;— . That the company reinatate the members of the Union on the same footing as before the strike, and return to the statue q\io ante ; that all matters m dispute be then referred to arbitration m order to admit of an equitable settlement. Failing acceptance by noon on Monday, the Union, with great relaotance, will be compelled to take such steps as it may think fit to meet the preseot hoatlle attitude of the Company." To-day a reply was received from the Company, declining to open any negotiations with the Union. The executive here aes^rt that they are billing to meet the Company m the nutter, but contend that it will be cheaper for them to oharter and ran steauers to find employment for the members than continue to pay the strike moMy.
