LOCAL AND GENERAL.
Nominations for the Gouraing Meeting to be held on Wednesday next dose this evening at Mr W. Zander's. It will be seen by an advertisement m another column that a meeting of the New Zealand Alliance for the suppression of the liquor traffic will be held m the Oddfellows' Hall this evening. The friends of Mr T. W. Glover (who is to give the prinoipal address this evening) will be glad to hear that his health is so far recovered as to enable him to resume all his duties. It will be remembered that Mr Glover is the lecturer and agent of the New Zealand Allianoe. Many will remember the eloquent address he delivered about a year ago when on a former visit m the company of Sir William Fox. The following by-days have been arranged for the Ashburton Hounds :— Tuesday, July 26th, at Elgin Bridge, at 1.30 p.m .; Saturday, July 30th, at Mr G. H. Alington'a, Methven, at 11.30 a.m. 1 At a meeting of the Committee of the Ashburton Racing Club held on Saturday last it was deoided to hold the Spring Meeting on j Nov. 17th and 18th; and a Bub-committee was [appointed to draw up a programme for Bubmisßion at a meeting to be held on August 6th, to which date the meeting adjourned. Soveral forged oheques have been passed at Ghristchuroh. On Saturday night a man named William Storey was arrested on a charge of passing a valueless oheque for £2 Ida on the Bank of New South Wales, purporting to be signed by a member of the firm of Scott Bros. The police state that other charges are pending against Storey. The salmon which were brought out to tb c New Norfolk Ponds, Tasmania, have begun to spawn. Because a woman disapproved of the Mayor of Hobart's municipal policy she attacked hia wife with an umbrella. It oost her 40s for the privilege. At the Wellington Police Court the other day an old woman was brought up, and remanded, on a charge of stealing a watch from a dead body which bad been washed up on the beiob,
Mias Agatha Bamsay, of Girtoi College, beat all the male students m classios at Cambridge, at the recent examination, being the only one of ither sex to pass m the first division. She is only 20 years old. Tho male contestants fairly cheered her name when the list was announced. The "Hawke'a Bay Herald" says :— The word "not" looks very insignificant as it stands alone, bat it is not to be passed over lightly. ■ The "London Evening Standard" has had to pay £250 and oosts for omitting it m an answer given by Lady Aylmor m tbe Divorce Court. She replied, " I was not intimate," etc., but the paper left out the little word of three letters, resulting m damages amounting to three figures. In the course of his speeoh at Newtown (says the " New Zealand Time 3") Mr C. B. Izard remarked, m a b rief divergence from an elaborate quotation of figures, that he had got bo far with " the case." He immediately recognised the Blip, and explained that, being k lawyer, he must be excused for unguardedly using the expression. Mr Izard added that on one ooqasion ha addressed a meeting of eleotors as " gentlemen of the jury."
