A TERRIBLE OPERATION
♦- Fow people are fully aware of the probable, If not certain, catastrophe which hasbeen averted by Dr Mackenzie's sudden Mp to Berlin, and the " narrow shave " which tbe Crown Prince haa really had, mainly m c mßequenco of ihe loss of a oipher. The Crowu Priocess seema to hava telegraphed to Her Majesty m cipher to Bend fcrDr Mackenzie. TheQ leenhadmia laid the key — a fuller message had to be eeat, and some time olapaed before D. MackeLz : e reoeived his commauds. On arriving, Professor Bergmann and six other medical men weie p'-epariog, with the aged Emperor's fu 1 approval, to perform tbe tjrrib!e operation of thyrotomy (not traclojtomy, as the French papers ; have it) for supposed cancer. The'operatlon if usually fatal, and aa it involves the severing of the thyroid cartilagj, invariably deprives the patient of his voice. (aa it did m the case of Mr Montagu Williams). The doctors were willing to defer to our English specialist but doubted tho possibility of removing a portion of the growth so far down the throat. However In a few secondr, by operating on the refl ction m a looking glass, Dr Mackenzie had the good fortune to bring away twc-thlrds of it ; an analysis by Virchow proved that there was no cancer; and the Crown Prince wai not only saved the operation, but is much cheered by the prospect of ultimate j recovery, whioh will not Improbably take placo under Dr Macker.zVs own auspices. Dr Maokenzie will leavu England on an early date on a second visit 'to the Crcwn Prince. If the heir-apperent were "Smith" or " Jones " matters would be simpler — trop de zeh seems to be the real danger. Great honor was conferred upon the whole of the English medical profeaaion m the person of Dr Morell M acker z : f>, twe palace 3 and a country residence at Potsdam being placed at his dispopal, and the greatest friendliners and courtesy being shown to him by every, ne of the Royal Familpi Dr Maokenz c's relations with all the German Court physicians werethroughoot most friendly, and hid skill reoeived from them the ruoit cordial and generous reooanition — ' Pall Mnll GuzHte.'
