Gbeymottih, July 21 Some little time ago. a difficulty arose between the Customs Department and the Midland Railway oontraotcra m respect to the Importation of dutiable railway material. It referred mainly to cement, bnt ealdlery end other artiol's also entered into th-> dispute as to the payment of duty. The contractors absolutely declined to pay dnty on any of tbeir importations required m the construotion of the railway. The matter is now finally settled. In addi'ion to admitting locomotives, rails, ntH rallwuy plant- free, the Goedrnm nt deeded, having regard to the special cireumsUncaa of the contract, to waive ihe claim for duty on all nut rial required for tho con strnctinn of the railway, on condition tbat someone on behalf of the firm make a declaration, to be certified by the Company's engineer ; that any entries claimed to be duty free are solely for the purpose of the railway, and should any of such goods be snbi q lently diverted t > another purpose the duiy will ba collected on the same. When the Cjllectos of Oustoon is< m any doubt as to any c ltries he is to oonault the Resident Engineer aa to whether thoy are required for the railway or not.
