Auckland, June 18. A fire took plsce at Oliphant street, Ponsonby, last night, and destroyed two four-roomed cottages, owned by Adams and Grovett respectively. The two adjoining cottages were ladly damaged All were Insured, but the offices are not ?et known. Wbliington, Ju'y 18. Harwood, who intimated a few days ago that he would scnll Hearn for the champlomhip of New Zealand, has withdraw v from the contest. At the Bankruptcy Court to-day Wm Henry Dobs on, an expressman, had his certificate suspended for 12 months on the grounds of commercial misconduot. Burglaries still continue to be reported. On Saturday night the premises of Messrs Gsstendyke and Focke were entered and the safe ransacked, but nothing valuable was stolen. Several attempted burglaries at private residences ate reported. His Honcr Mr Justice Richmond took the occasion, this morning, of counsel applying for hie costs m defending W. R. Waters m tbe Bankruptcy Court recently, to stigmatise that bankruptcy as a most disgraceful one, although the law had not been able to teach the debtor. His Honor highly complimented Mr Skerratt on bis able defence of his client, bat reduced the costs applied for to 25^s. The Official Afsignee's solicitor's costs of 40gs were allowed, and Skerratt had applied for the same amount. Another of the cases which have arisen out of Waters' bankruptcy — Northern Laud, Loan and Building Company v City Advances and Deposit Company — is to be heard m the ; Supreme Court to-morrow: Dtjnedin, July 18. Mr Dundas' residence at South Dunedin was burned down. It was ineured m the New Zealand for £75, and m the National for £70
