The second of the series of social gatherings under the auspioes of the Ashburton Guards will be held ia the Oddfellows' Hall this evening. A very attractive programme has been prepared.
A rather curious case oarae before the R.M. Oourt this morning. A few days ago a very old woman waß taken to the Aehburton Hospital for treatment for dislocation of the shoulder. It was considered necessary to place her under chloroform, but she refused to be placed under the operation of the drug. Furthermore she beoame very violent and refused to leave the Hospital, so that it beoame necessary to send for the police to remove her. She was charged at the R.M. Court this morning, but, as the Hospital authorities were reluctant to prosecute, the polioo obtained leave to withdraw the case.

Clark, and Kingawell; halfbacks, Moore and Leohnor ; forwards, E, Simpson, Field (2), R. Stewart, Fooks, E. J. f (oaptain) *, H. Fooks, B. Stewart, B. Low, and 0. Moss. Emergenoies : 0. Hart, A. Curtis, A. Orr, and 0. Chapman. Flay begins at 2.30 p.m. sharp.
A sensation was created at Glendonville, Pa., U.S.A., by the elopement on May 20th of a white girl named Ida Wisner with a negroi Miss Wisner is 20 years of age, described as beautiful and accomplished, and her father is the wealthiest oitizen ia the place ; the negro, Thompson, was employed by him as a ooachman. In a note left for her parents, Miss Wiener said she realised the full measure of her blind infatuation.
Speaking lately m the Hawke's Bay district, Mr Sutton perpetrated a regular "ball." Speaking of taxation, he said, " You cannot colleot taxeß from a naked man. You must take it from something he has m his pooket." The audience began to simmer at once, and m ten seoonda were m a violent ebullition of
laughter, while the perpetrator swung round on his heel and retreated to the baok of the stage to mentally box his own ears. Returning to the front he fairly bogged the bull and caused more laughter by explaining, " You must take it from something he has m his possession — if he has anything."
