AN INDUSTRIOUS RAT.
On a recent evening a settler roeiding in the Waimoa district observed a rat making too free with some choßtnuts, which he
ljnd stored, in ono of his buildings, and seeing the thief walk off more than once with a single chestnut, ho determined to stay and .ratch the proceedings. He was tho more disposed to be patient when he saw that the rat deposited the chestnuts under
tho flooring in such a position that tho hoard could be easily reached. Keeping at such a dietance that he. could, only just see the rat running to ind fro in the moonlight, pur ioformant waited foi half an hour, by which time tho whole of tho chestnuts had been removed one by one. Ho then proceeded to recover the treasure, and out of ouriosity he weighed the chestnuts, and found ho hod ten pounds weight. But for tho proof, it would scarcely .bo believed that a single rat could move Buch a weight a distance of some few yards in so short a time, and possibly suspicion might have fallen on some larger fancier pf chestnuts, bnt the circumstance Bhows what may be accom • pltshed by stioking to & job. The rat is described as having kept up a constant run the whole time*
