ATTEMPTED "SUICIDE
Hokitika, July 7. B. U. Solomon, traveller for Matheaon Bros , Dunedin, jumped off the stern of the steamer Sha? into the river. He had heavy clothes on, whioh kept him afloat. Two men on the wharf saw the uck, j promptly got a boat, and reßcned him before he sunk, although he fl >ated a oonelderablo dlatanoa m a Btrong ourrent, the rescuers' running no email risk of being swept out to sea. On being brought to, Solomon said, •' What ia the matter 1 " and asked for hie hat. The police took him m oharge for attempting suicide, and ho h%a been oommltted to the Lunatlo Asylum for medical treatment, I r < is rumoured that on the morning of the attempt he sent telegrams to his wifa aHd ovnpl^yero at Dunedin, whfoh gave a suspicion that his mind vras m an unsound Btate. The Telegraph Department refuses to produce tho telegram?,
