COLONIAL ITEMS.
The Colonial Union Company's first steamer; Balmoral Castle, which is announced to leave for Sydney and New Zealand on July 20th, is filling well both with cargo and passengers. At a banquet given by the Federation League Sir Henry Holland, the Honf Edwaid: Stanhope, and Lord Rosebery were present. Lord Rosebery,;in the course of his speech, said it was impossible to measure the results that would spring from the Imperial Cofnerence. The League advocated precautionary measures, believing that by such a course the ultimate object would best be obtained. Reports from the German settlements m New Guinea are of the most disastrous character. The tenders for the Melbourne tramways trust .loan ofj£2oo,ooo, bearing aY% percent interest, were opened today. The. total amount offered was Tenders at £106 3s receive 5. per cent of allotment. Those . above that receive m full.
