HORRIBLE BRUTALITY IN THE TRANSVAAL.
Tha editor of the "Eastern Province Hera'd " writes from Port Elizabeth, ca'Hng attention to the following sickening story of Boer brutality m the Transvaal. He says— We take it from the "Transvaal Advertiser," aDd the acoura'cy of the account is vouched for by that paper : — My name is Sara. I am about 2t yeaid of age. On Monday last I was discharged from the Pretoria gaoi, , after being Imprisoned for two months. I was sent to prison beoauae I was said to have been impudent to a wMta woman. I wa3 not i-npudent, bub Mrß D said that I had enticed the girl Fachel to ran away. The Field-cornet came with a black constable, and said "Catch that impudent woman, and tak* her to the prison." Maraba said that I should bo taken to the Tanddrost first I was taken to the landdrost and fined £3, but as I oould not pay, I wag sent to tronk, and ordered to get 25 laßhea. I was locked up for three weeks, and then the Landdrost came to the tronk ani ordered me to receive the twenty lashes while he stood by. I was tied no by the wrists and logs, ani wa<* flogged until I fainted. The blood came out of my back where I was fl Jgged. I had all my clothes taken off with the exception of my chemise, whioh was held round my loins. It was after breakfast that I was fl >gged. When the Ltoddorst came I wa«j washing his clothes. : When I recovered from my faint I fouad myself on the b'aakafc. Ia the* night of the day tb*t I was flogged they sent for a doator. . He pulled open my rmuth and put some stuff to my noße. Mavis^ had been twice flogged oy order of the Landdorst. The first time she had fifteen lashes,, which weie itjflicted m the men'B yard. She wav stripped, her chem'se being tied about her ai mine was. tihe was then fljgged on her shoulders. J- he was put m the tronk for two days on that occasion. When she went out ehe went to the Landdorst's house, and as she refused to work m consequence of her back being sore, she was sent back for four days and receive a flogging of twenty-five lashes. As her back was too raw to be fl logged again m the same pk:a, I waß told to roll up her chemise so that she could be flogged lower down. That flogging took place m the women's yaid, Mr Van Keenen was present and the woman was flogged by "Jack." Van Reenen would not let me be flogged first because, he said, I was too weak. Abcut three weeks after I. was put m the tronk, the L\oddroat oame up m order to see that his sentenoe on me Was carried out, and I we.-> tied up and flagged m his pretence, tbe Linddrost standing m front of me. When the Landdrost was told that I would not finish the washing of his clothes, he ordered me to be put m the stocks, and I was kept m the Btocka two days and two nighh, and kept without food the whole time. I know of six women being fljgged white I wai m ths tronk. All were flogged mih the cat-o-Qine«tails, and all were beaten by "Jack," who does all the flogging m the gaol.
