THE BLENHEIM FIRE.
Blenheim, July 5. The enquiry into the cause of the fire at the Criterion Hotel began to-day, before Mr J. Allen, Ooroner, and a jnry. There are fifteen witnesses m the case. The evidence of (he third was not completed this afternoon. William Gar.er, sen of the landlord, wld that he and his two brothers slept In the room where the fire broke oat, on the upper story over the dining-room. Be wbs awakened by the noise and the smoke. The fire was blazl&g through a hole m the floor. This he put out with water m a tab. Then be saw a glare from the ventilator m the Gelling. There had been a tire m the room all day. Witness did not glre the alarm, but tried to 1)0 1 out the fire. William Donslin, architect, produced a plan of the house. The chimneys were well bailt. Rofcert Tcormd, night porter, said that when he raw the fire he called Mr »nd Mrs Carter, and tried to pat oat the Sre with hand grenades. The enquiry is likely to last for several d»ys.
