OPENING OF THE WOOL SALES.

(REUTER'a.jTai.EGRAMS— COPYRIGHT ] London, June 7. The third of the year's series of colonial wool auctions commenced to-day before a good attendance of Home and foreign buyers. The opening catalogue comprised 10,000 bales, for which a fair demand was manifested. Prices for low qualities merino wool and for fine crossbreds ruled a halfpenny lower than the closing rates of the MarchApril series. Coarse crossbreds sold halfpenny to a penny lower than last sales' closing rates. The series will close on the 21st Joly. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, has received the following cable message from London, dated 7th June, 1887 :— Woll — The sales opened to-day scarcely at the level of last sales. Prices — crossbred wool has declined %d to id per lb. The attendance of both Home and foreign buyers is good, and their competition is fairly active. The opening catalogue contained 10,000 bales. The sales comprise about 330,000 bales — -39,000 bales have been sent to the manufacturing districts direct. Tallcw —The market has a hardening tendency. Good mutton and good beef tallows are worth respectively 23s and 21s 6d per ewe. _
