The Borough Council meets this evening.!
" One interested," Alford Forest, writes to us, stating that " the subscription lists being sent round the county for contributions to tho Jubilco Memorial miike no reference as to the form the permanent memorial is to take."
Tho Aahburton Rifles and Guards will parade at the Drillshed to-morrow (Tuesday) evening at 7 o'olook for the usual Government Inspection. It is understood the District Adjutant, Major Newall, will be present on this occasion ; and we notice that tho men are ordered to wear full dress— helmets and tunics.
The inward Home mails, via San Franoisoo, arrived m Ashburton this morning by express train and were at once sorted up and dolivered by the postal oflloials,
Washing machine trials seem now to be the order of the day. On Saturday last two took place on the vacant ground at the rear of the Somerset Hotel. }h Hardley was working the machine invented and patented by him, while a Bbort dißtanoe off Mr Most was busy manipulating a rival concern. A considerable number of people were attracted to the spot, and clothes having been supplied m abundanoe, there was ample BOope for the display of tho excellencies of each wnsher. We were this morning showed a •• blanket »' belonging to a printing machine a very difficult article to wash — whioh was on Saturday given to Mr Hardley to be operated on. It was

A special meeting of tbo Hamp3tead Town Board was held on Friday evening to consider the balance-sheet, whioh was adopted. The Rev J. D. Grimes, of St. Mary's, Paignton, South Devon, has been appointed Roman Oatholio Bishop of Ohristohuroh.

On Friday last the usual monthly meeting of the Tinwald Distriot Sohool Committee was held m the schoolroom, when all the members were present. Correspondence was read, and also a report from the Master re the state of the school — The Chairman laid upon the table oopies of the Education Aot as ordered last meeting, and reported that he had received all the monies that had been collected by the late Committee for prizes to the scholars. The amount ' was £4 16s. Aooounts were passed for payment.— The Chairman was requested to draw the Care* , taker's attention to the specifications m reference to the items referred to by tho Visiting Committee.— Tho Visiting Committee were authorised to procure a man to do the neoessary repairs named m their report.— lt was resolved that the Chairman, late Chairman, and the Master be a Committee to select books for prizes, and the •distribution of tho same be m accordance with the Inspector's report as far as practicable. — The Chairman was appointed seoretary for the present term.— Applications for .the position of pupil teaoher were then opened and out of five candidates Master Rees Williams was eleoted subjeot to the approval of the Board of Education. —lt was also reaolved, " That the Chairman write to the Board m reference to the appointment of a successor to the present Maater, whose presant engagement terminates m July next." The usual monthly meeting of the Hampstead Town Board was held on Friday evening. Present: Messrs Mayo (m the ohair), Fawcett, and Andrewa. The Works Committee reported that they wore proceeding with neoessary works m accordance with resolution passed al last meeting; also that they had accepted Mr Robert Bennett's tender for shingle at BJd per yard.— This contract included shinglingorossings. — Correspondence was road from the Property Tax Commissioner re subsidy; The Clerk reported that he had not yet received the amount.— lt was resolved, " That Mr Crum'a request for soil bo complied with when convenient."— lt was decided that a deputation consisting of tho Chairman, Messrs Fawoett and Andrews be appointed to wait on the Borough Council to come to an understanding re Bolts and Fire Brigade. Carried.— The Clerk was instructed to write asking when it would ba convenient for the Borough to receive the deputation. The name deputation was appointed to interview the County Council re County roads, water supply, and slaughtering licensen Accounts were passed for payment The Clerk was instructed to write to the Inspector of Nuisances re reports and stray cattle.— Kesolve,d, " That notices bo posted cautioning people against riding on footpaths, The ; Works Committeo were instructed to carry out thiß resolution.— The Board resolved to enforce the by-law regarding putting bridges over ohannels.— lt was also resolved, " That all rates must be paid by June 11th. or sued for."— Resolved, " That the " Looal Bodies Loans Act " be adopted, a special meeting to be held on Thursday, June 2 ad, to confirm thiß resolution." Tho Board then adjourned.
The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agenoy Company, Limited, has received the following cable message from London, dated 27th May, 1887 :— " Tallow— Thero is a rather better demand; it is partly speculative and partly consumptive. Tallow has advanced 6d per owt since last report. South Amerioan is quoted at 28s Od per owt."
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Tinwald Town Board was held on Friday evening. Prosont — Messrs T. Clark (chairman), Shearer, Soott, and Itoid. Corroßpondence was read (1) from Mr D. Thomas oalling the Board's attention to the bad state of Carter's terrace. It was resolved to m. form Mr Thomas that the street; would be shingled as soon as funds will permit.— (2) From the Ashburton County Council vo Dog Registration. The Clerk was instructed to interview the County Clerk on the subject. (U) From the Rev B. F. Garbett re water lying m JHarland street. The Surveyor was instructed :to and if necessary call for tenders for forming the street at once. — The tender of Mr Dwyor, at 10s per chain, was accepted for forming | and metalling footpath along Great South Itoad. The Surveyor was instructed to have certain repairs effected m the Maronan road. After passing aocounts and transacting routine business, the Board adjourned. A apeoial meeting was held after the ordinary meeting, the same members being present.
