THE POST OFFICE FIRE.

The enquiry Into the Post Office fire ocoupied Dr. Johnston, Coroner, and a jury of six, all day today. After deliberating twenty-one minutes, the jury r6torned a verdict that the fire originated In the Press reporters' room attaohed to the Telegraph Depattment, and they added a rider to the effeot that, smoking should be prohibited among officers after eight o'clook at night. Mr Hart, the telephone clerk, who was the only officer on duty when the alarm was given, deposed that immediately he was Informed of the fire m the building he vlalted the Press reporters' room, and there was no sign of fire there. The evidence given by the Post Office and Telegraph officers was of a conflicting nature. The captain of the Fire Brigade gave it as his opinion that the fire originated near the top of the building. The cost of removing the telephone exchange to the new building, replacing apparatus, and setting up the neoeßßary poles and wirrjs ii estimated at £10C0. It is expected communication will be restored m a fortnight.
