DEFYING THE GOVERNMENT

At the Harbor Board meeting to-night, an animated debate took place on the queation of day labor. Communications were received from the Minister of Marine, expressing surprise at the action of the Board In continuing day labor as a system, and protesting against it as the most expensive method. Only four members were present, the others being at Parliament, The Chairman pointed out the uselessness of opposing the wishes of Government, and moved that leave be given to rescind the former resolution regarding day labor. Mr Petrle opposed, and denonnced the aotion of the Government m restraining the Board from employing day labor, He objected to having a whip held over their heads In that w»y, and would compel the Government to cashier them ■ooner than yield, which he was sure they would not dare to do. The Chairman gave notfoe to move bis resolution at the next ordinary meeting. Mr Petrie sain he would take care not to be there, so that nothing could bo dono. It was •gv e3 to furnish th'e minutes as requested by the Marine depattment.
