Wellington, May 23.

At a crowded public meeting to-nfght the following resolutions were passed : - "That New Zealand requires a fiscal polioy which will create new manufactures and industries, and thus afford employment not only to the ptesent adult population bat to the young people of bdtH sexes and the development of her domestic produoing forcea to accomplish this, which can bo beßt aohleved by the adoption of the principles of, Protection." "That a committee be appointed to ezamine every line m the present tariff, and recommend to the Colonial Treasurer Buoh alterations as it deems necessary m the interest of local Industries." Among those who addressed the meeting were Messrs Dargavllle, Levestam, and Fisher, M H.R.'a. O.AMARU, May 23.

A meeting of the Chamber of Commerce vraa held to day, to ditcuaa the new Oustomo tariff. After discussion it was resolved that, m the opinion of this Chamber, all the duties for protective purposes only should not be brought into operation, but if it were necessary to rJse revenue, the duties on such articles bb tea, sugar, spirits, wines, cigars, and tobacco should be increased.

A deputation of those Interested m the printing and publishing tr^de waited on Mr Downie Stewart, to-day, with reference to the proposed duty on imported almanacß and calendars. Mr Wilkle, the spokesman, eaid thai almanacs for this year were already ordered, and as agreement a for price with importers were already made, the latter would have to be at the loss, or oancel the orders. They only asked at present for the removal of the duty for the present year ; but if it were not removed altogether the importation of almanacs would be stopped. Mr Stewart said he would lay tho matter before Sir J. Yogel. If the deputation would make up a list of the classes of printed goods that could be turned out m the colony, and another of those that could not, he would submit them to the Colonial Treasurer.
