WRECK OF THE STEAMERS GO-AHEAD AND SIR DONALD.
LOST OF LIFE. Napijsb, May 22. The 8.8, Go-ahead went ashore at Cape Kidnappers at two o'clock on Friday morning, and ia now a total wreck. All on board were Ba?ed except a fireman named Tanning, who would not leave the. chip In the boat when all the others went off, fearing the boat could not live m the Best. Some time afterwards at low water he attempted to awim ashore, but was drowned when half-way to the beaoh. The crew and passengers who escaped made their way to Clifton station, where every thiag possible for their comfort was done. The aooldent was doe to the terribly thick weather, which rendered it impossible to see the land, the vessel being m the breakers before it was known there was anything wrong. If there had been a light on or near the Kidnappers the disaster conld not have happened. The vessel is a total wreck, bottom upwards, and nearly all broken up. Dews has also reached here of the wreok of the Sir Donald, a steamer belonging to the port of Kapler. She has gone ashore about five miles north of Gisborne, and is broken up completely. It ia feared that all lives are lost. The news has caused quite a gloom m Napier, already sufficiently saddened by the disaster to the 800 jam last week, when endeavoring to Baooour the ill fated Northumberland. Gisbornb, May 23. . An Saturday night it was reported to the Colleger of Customs here that a quantity of wreckage was washed up on tbe beaoh at Wninni 3 miles from here. The Collector of Customs and Sergeant Bullen prooeeded to the beach and f ouud a quantity of timber, grass seed, and turnery apparently, also the mizzen mast and a sail attached, two boat?, one a small one. The forepart of a vesßel was discernable on the rooks. The opinion is that it is tbe wreck of the Sir Donald, which left Napier for Blackhead on Tueß' day night. The wreok poaslbly took plaoe on Friday night, As a fearful sea was running then and from the position of the vessel and boat probably all hands were lO3t.
