The Aborigines' Protection Society urge that a rigid inquiry should be made into the charges made by Mr Gribbles, and recommend that a Royal Commission should be appointed.
The Rev James Chalmers says that England objects to hand ovefr the adr ministration of New Guinea to Queensland, as it fears the influence of the Government. Mr Chalmers hopes that efforts to Anglicise the Papuans will cease, as it is better to leave them m their natural state, and he considers that any further efforts m that direction will end m unpleasant results. The Australian Merchant Shipping Company is unsuccessful, as the shipowners have agreed to make certain concessions. A Royal Commission for the Melbourne Exhibition is about to ;.be appointed. The Chamber of Commerce will co-operate with it. The Eaglehawk Consolidated Mining Company has been issued, with a capital of The success of the Company is assured. The consignment of Tasmanian apples by the Ormuz are being sold a t from 12s 6dto 22s 6d the half barrel. An article, written by Mr Mclntyre, of Sandhurst, describing the gold industry of Victoiia, has attracted a good deal of attention. (Received May 21, 3.15 p.m.)
