THE TARIFF

Auckland, May 20. Mr Seed, of the Omtoms Department, telegraphs to Me Trenwlth, President of the Auckland Baotmakors' Association as follows :-~Sir J, Yogel directs mo to Inform you that In the tariff Bill less duty wlli be Imposed on leather than that In reßolutioa. He thinks this ohaage will meet the views of the trade. At a meeting of the ooaohbuildera trade last night it was resolved that n. the opinion of this meeting the proposed alteration m the tariff Is detrimental to the carriage building trade of the colony on the grounds that while new material has been raised 6 to 15 pet cent, manufactured carriages have only been raised 5 per oent ; that instead of an ad valorem duty on vehicles the duty should be assessed m the dlrootion of the Victorian tariff. It was aho decided that In the opinion of iho meeting oarrlage requisites and all new material required by the trade should be admitted free of duty. _ Dumbdin, May 20. Sir J. Yogel replies to the OhalrmauoE Wednesday's meeting as followt :— You state the meeting was representative. May I be excused asking representative of what] Evidently a person with a kaow ledge of tcado and of the existing tariff could not have framed the resolutions, The first Is. purely a political one, and forgive me for saying should rather be submitted to a public than a private meeting. The second is pceoisely what; the new tariff continued with the old one does, And it appears to be extraoted from a hand book on politioal economy. It the third had the effect given it, existing duties on bear, tobacco, spirits, wines, biscuits jams, oandles, and other ar Holes produoible m the colony, besides tea and sugar", would bave to ba largely reduced, It is obvious by an absurdity and demonstrative of the faol that these subjects cannot be dealt with by the light of theoretical views. Tho only principle oontended tit In the fourth is adopted to the utmost extent practicable and the same remark applies to the fifth. The sixth appears to be the result of not reading aa much of tho old tariff as is left und'sturbed.
