A public meeting to oonsider what steps Bhould be taken towards celebrating the Queen's Jubilee, will be held m tha Oddfellows' Hall on Thursday next. A movement is on foot to upset the election of Mr R. Campbell for the Hakatere Ward of the Upper Ashburton Road Board, on the ground that the nomination of Mr H. Fried lander was refused, illegally it is alleged. Mr Andrew Orr announces that he intends to bold a clearing sale of drapery, &0., commenoing from Thursday next. Messrs Orr and Aloorn invite written tenders for the purchase of the 250-aore firm, Ashburton Forks, known as "Ruddick's." Tenders close on the 16th inst. An error ooourred m our report of the judgment given m the caße of Matson v. Friedlander, heard at the Court yesterday. The actual judgment was for the plaintiff for the amount paid into Court, the defendant not the plaintiff, being allowed costs.
The Ashburton High School separated yesterday for the usual receßß. After the master and mistress had reported the results of the examinations on their separate sohools* all the pupils assembled m the girls' sohoolroom for the purpose of making a presentation to the Headmaster on his retirement The souvenir was a plain but massive gold, ring, suitably insoribed as the gift of the pupils and teachers. Mr Buchanan made the presentation, and expressed the pleasure but not free from much regret, with which he fulfilled the duties of the ocoasion. — Mr Hogg replied m a feeling manner, and said while he should always esteem highly the valuable gift he had received that day, he Bhould be ever more highly pleased to hear m the future of the suooess of the pupils m their studies, and to find them developing useful and noble lives when engaged m the realities of life. — After applause and oheers the pupils were allowed to separate. At [the |tea meeting 'at Flemington" on Thursday, tables were provided by the following ladies: — Meßdames W. Prebble, H. Donaldson, J. Dunn, J, McOonnell, assisted by the Misses Small (2), Smith (2), Donaldson, Anderson, and Dorkin. The bachelors table was under the superinteadanoe of Miss Lizzie Holland, by the Misses Anderson and Miss Mary Holland, The tables as a wholejwero the subjeot of general admiration and reflected the utmost credit on the ladies above mentioned. A meeting of the Ashburton Hospital Board was held at fire o'clock yesterday. Present —Messrs C. J. Harper (ohairman), J. Jaokson, D. MoLean, and the; Mayor. Routine business was transacted and aooounts were passed for payment. The Treasurer was authorised to appoint a colleotor, with power to sue for outstanding aooounts if necessary. It was resolved that the gutters of the Hospital be attended to, the matter being left m |the hands of Mr Harrison. The Board then adjourned. ■In regard to the forthcoming Melbourne Jubilee celebration it is stated that the Government intend to ask the various iorganisatons and trade sooieties to join m monster procesoßsion through the city. The Ashburton High Sohool Board held a meeting yesterday afternoon at 3.30 p.m. at i the offioes of the County Counoil. —Mr j Wright ocoupied the chair. — It was resolved ; to appoint an assistant mistress for the ■' Girlß' Sohool, speoially qualified to take ! advanced Frenoh and music— The Chairman ' read the report of the. sohool for the last year aa follows :— Ashburton Boya' and Girls' High j Schools. Inspeoted November 19th, 1886. — \ This school is on a small scale, and very much Bub- divided into small groups of pupils* but there is considerable enthusiasm and sound teaching. The girls have a separate building to themselves with an able mistress, \ and the masters of the Boys' Sohool take classes m the Girls' Sohool m turns.— Signed, W. J. Habens, Inspector-General. — After the transaction of routine business, the Board adjourned, The civil case which oame up m the B.M. Court yesterday was Moison v. Morse, and not Moison v. Moss as was inadvertedly printed. The usual weekly meeting of the Star of the East Lodge, 1.0. G.T., was held m the Arcade Chambers, on Wednesday evening. There was a good attendance of members, and after the usual routine bdsiness, the various officers submitted their reports, whioh were satisfactory. The officors for the ensuing quarter were installed by Bro T. Dal ton, the new Lodge Deputy, as follows :— Bro T. Kingston, C.T. ; Bro J. Sawle, V.T. ; Bro A. Cook, W.S.; Sister A. Wildsmith, A.S.; Bro Daltpn, F.S. ; Bro Mullaney, T. ; Sister Wildsmith, C. ; Bro Elston, M. ; Sister Kingston, D.M. ; Bro E. Sawle, 1.G. ; Sister E. Manhire, L.S. ; and Sister Sawle, U.S. The ceremony of installation was performed m an impressive manner. The L.D. was assisted by Sister E. Webb, of the Pioneer Lodge, Wellington. A vote of thanks to the installing offioers was passed, and a similar compliment was also paid to the retiring offioers. Sister Webb presented the greetings of her Lodge, after whioh very interesting and instructive addresses were given by Bros Cook, Nourish, Elston, and Sister Wildsmith. The newlyinstalled Chief returned thanks for the honor whioh had been conferred on him, after whioh the Lodge was olosed m due form.
Among the attractions at the Wesleyan Bazaar to-night will be a oonnndrum competition for whioh three handsome prizes are offered. A fair amount of business was transacted yesterday, and to. day the stallholders indefatigable m waiting on their numerous patrons, the following ladies having charge over the respeotive departments :— Married ladies': Mes dames MoNicoll, E. Alcorn, Fox, Bonnington, and W. H. Collins ; Young peoples': Misses Harvey, Steel (2), Aloorn (3), Patching, Permain, Murray, and Pearson; Refreshment Stall :— Mesdameo 0. Baker, H. M. Carson, and Undrill ; Bride cake :— Misses Fox, Flesher, and A. Alcorn. Several friends kindly manipulated the piano at intervals, and we understand that additional musical attractions will be provided to-night. Entrance tickets, if not exchanged for goods m the interim, will admit holders till the conclusion of the bazaar, when they may be utilised as noted m a previous issue.
At Wanganui on Sunday Dr Redwood, m replying to a congratulatory address presented to him by the looal Roman Catholio oongregation, referred to -a point mentioned m an address of his being an early oolonist, m f aot almost a' colonial. He said that no doubt the Pope wished to confer an hqnor on New Zealand m the shape of one of her own children, and hence the compliment to the colony through him — a oompliment which he believed would be appreciated all over the colony. The] address eiDrawied '.satisfaction that the Wanganui congregation should have been the first to hare the honor of welooming the Arohbishop-eleot, and Dr Redwood reoiprooated the sentiment by saying that thero was no other congregation he would sooner have met that day with the exception of his own Cathedral oongregation at Wellington. Mr Stead declines to come forward fo r Avon. Mr Percy J. Fryer is mentioned as a possible oandidate.
