LOCAL AND GENERAL.

• — -' The Borough Council "meets this evening. Early on Saturday evening shopkeepers who bad their establishments open were astonished at the gas suddenly lowering till there was but the merest flioker at eaoh burner. In some places if was found impossible to conduct business with the scanty light, whioh had therefore to be augmented by candles and lamps. The dismal aspeot of East street occasioned by tho drizzling. rain was not lessened by the " dim religious light ' visible m the shops m the prinoipal thoroughfare of the town. Mr George Coe, not Mr George Cole as stated by us on Saturday, has been elected a member of the WaKanui Road Board for No. 2 Ward. The latter [gentleman was, until lately, a member of the Board from which he resigned, and Mr Coe was elected m his place. The similarity m tho names caused the mistake. The San Franoisoo^mail arrived at Auokland on Saturday. The weakest woman, smallest child, and Bickcst invalid can use American Co.'s Hop Bitters with safety and great good. See Holloway's Ointment and Pills. — Colds, Coughs, Shortness of Breath. — These maladies require early and unremitting attention, for if neglected they often end m asthma, | bronohitis, or consumption, The Ointment well rubbed upon the ohest and back, penetrating the skin, is absorbed and carried directly to the Jungs, whence it expels all impurities. All tho blood m the body is perpetually passing through the lungs, and there all noxious particles tending to disease can be quickly, thoroughly, and permanently neutralised, rendered harmless, or ejeoted from the system. Hclloway's Ointment and Pills perfectly accomplish this purification ; and through the blood thus cleansed, the influence of these wonderful medioaments reaches tho remotest parts of tho human body, and thus cures all diseased aotion, whether iatern&l or external.

Mr Thomas Horriofc, Hon Secretary of the { Prison Gate Mission, writes to us asking us to biJng under the notice of the oharitablydisposed m. this district the fact that the new Homo has been opened. During the past month or so tha Committee,' through lack of funds, were obliged <to close the mission, but they have now made a fresh start m new premises at Sydenham, near the tram terminus, where only men will be received, it being found unndvisable to receive both sexes, the Home being so very expensive and difficult. Mrs Green has been appointed matron m the place of Mrs Reflles, the whole management of tho Home being? under the control of the Committee. Auy small donations will be thankfully received and duly acknowledged , by the Seoretary. A fund is being raised to prevent the sale at Ruction of Daniel O'Connell's old home and personal effects, which are m danger through the bankruptcy of the present owner. A trial of an unusual character has just terminated at Brisbane. Bobert and Gilbert Wilson, directors of the Queensland Mercantile and Agency Company, were charged with misappropriating over £3000 of the Company's funds. The defence was that tho money was an advance. On the first indiotment there was an acquittal, 'and the Crown entered a nolle m reßpect to the others. Immense interest was taken m these cases, on account of the exceptional nature of the charge, the large amounts involved, and because all the parties connected with the case hold high positions m mercantile and social circles m Brisbane. The opening meet of the Reason of the Ashburton Hunt .Club on Saturday last was as usual favored with anything but good weather, and only^the most ardent sportsmen had put m an appearance, when the Club' s new huntsman, Mr E. W. Bowger, arrived op. posite Mr Foster's, Dromore, with his little paok, which were m first clbbs condition, and showed sighs of considerable care and attention having been bestowed upon them. Soon after the appointed time, 1.30 p.m., Mr Upton, Deputy- Master, gave the word, and a start was made, a hare soon being found, but after a short run over some nice country was lost, several hares jumping up and dividing the pack. The rest of the afternoon was taken up by a succession of short runs, pu&S each time getting back to the plantation. The spurt was anything but good owing to the heavy rain which was falling nearly the whole afternoon, the number of hares and.the plantations m the district. Amongst those present were Mr and Mrs Upton (the latter on " The Masher," who fenced splendidly)! Messrs Russell, Helmore^ W. O'Connell, T. Hunt, Reid, Wroughton, Markey, Kearney, and Duncan. A few of the Club's well-wisherß» not to be deterred by the inclemency of the weather, turned out on wheels, and amongst them we noticed Mrs Secretan, of Rakaia» and Miss Larnacb, of Dunedin. The Master of the Ashburton Home desires to (acknowledge, with thanks, the receipt of fruit and vegetables from the Rev A. E. Scott, papers from Mr Paul, joints of meat] from Ashbuiton Club, clothing from Mr Craighead and also from a Friend, for the nse of the inmates. Tho following undermentioned letters were received from jplacos beyond the colony and lying unclaimed at the Ashburton Post Office on Ist May :— George Ball,. Alexander Kane, James Lyon, Joseph McMurray, Peter Magnieson, John Smither, and Joseph Taylor. Col Roden, Commanding Officer of the 3rd Volu»u,x- lUUa,i:o» Bnnf.h Wain* TWiWnrH. \ had paid a vist to the Argentine siver-lead ' mines at Calvi, m Corsica, of which" he was the managing director. He discovered that during his absence m England some extravagance had grown up m the management of \ the concern, and a larger number of inon were \ being employed than was necessary. He thereupon gave instructions for the dismissal ' of several of the men. At midday, after the workmen had been discharged, one of them, who had concealed himself, shot Col Roden from behind as he left his house. The bullet I struck his spine, and he was killed on the spot. The assassin was shortly afterwards arrested „ by order of the British Consul. ; We clip the following important testimonial 1 from the " Illawarra Mercury" (N.S.W.), on , the 30th March. It needs no commpnt : — ' "Mr John Loveday, of the Bulli Mountain, > writes to us that after suffering for four years : with acute gravel, he has experienced almost I complete lelief by using Sander and Sons' r Euoa)ypti Extract. He says, seeing the said Extract advertised m the " Illawarra ' Mercury," his intense [suffering induced him > to obtaiu a bottle of the medicine from Mr ! Hosking, chemist, of this town, and that the . use of it gave him great relief at once. He states that between the 10th March instant, ■ when bo obtained the first bottle of the : extract, and on the 19th, the use of that r medicine continued to afford him relief, to , which he had been a stranger for four years. Mr Loveday writes also that he has found the 1 Eucalypti Extract a cure for rheumatism as well as gravel. He requests us to publish this > information through the " Mercury." We ', have much pleasure m complying with Mr [ Loveday's request, whose word oannot be : doubted, and who can have no object m view i other than a pure desire to benefit suffering [ humanity." — (Advt.)
