ME DOWIE AND FREEMASONS.
Auckland, April 29. A controversy Is proceeding respecting a statement alleged to have been made by the Rev Mr Dowie, that Freemasons were gluttons and drnnkards. Mr Dowle was contradicted, and it is said that he told a geatleman, who came to hltn to he healed, and who was a Mason, that he must glvo up calling men brethren -who were going to hell. Mr Dowie said, moreover, that he remarked, wheu speaking about Freemasonry, that it seemed to him a )ot of idiotic tomfoolery ; that it seemed formed for the purposes of fostering pleasures of eatlug and drinking ; and that many who joined the Order had become drunkards and gluttons. When it had been proved I hat what be had said respecting Freemasonry was falßO, he would retraot the charge, bub not till then. Several letters have appeared m the papers containing indignant protests against Mr Dowie's statement.
