GIANT TREES OF AUSTRALIA
A contributor t> the " Hawke 3 Bay Herald " writing of the foreeti of Australia says : — Those who have been m either the npper reachea of the river Yarra, the Dandenong forest, on Maodonald'a track going tiwardß the Baas river, or m the heart of Sooth Glppaland, or m the Otway ranges, know that trees upwarda of 400 feet high, and aix f y to seventy feet m glrtb, four feet from the ground are to be enoouotered. I will never forget my first view of them. The trees grow straight up 83 if eoeklng the sun, and are ao oloae together that they are almost devoid of branches ; m fact m many eises the first branches begin at 300- feet from the ground. Asked what I thought of them, I replied they wero for all the world like a foreßt of maata. By oompariaon tho trees m the New Zealand buah are but pigmiea. ■
