. . ♦ Libel Action. Wellington. April 14. The libel action Mahon and Leitb v. " Evening Post,'' claim £1003, began this morning. The alleged libel was contained In a paragraph on Janua»y 15, stating that plaintiffs had left for Fji leaving a good many anxious enquirers behind them. Ihn defendants denied that the words •wet c libellous or bore, the meaning applied to them by tha plaintiff?, which was that they were insolvent and had absconded to •void, payment of their just debts, but that they meant they had left some creditors behind them. Bankruptcy. DiTNEMff, April 14. At a meeting of creditors m the estate of Esther and Lowe yesterday a balancesheet was presented, showing the firm's liabilities to be £19,628, and the assets £22,463. Lowe explainod that hla annual balance at the 31st March, 1886, showed a surplus of £10,GC0. His net losseß daring the past year amounted to over JB7QC3. It was resolved to accept a comKrftiou of 17a 6d m the £, 15a payab'.e equal monthly instalments over a period of 12 months, and 2a 6 d m 15 months. Lowe expressed the opinion that lie would be able to carry out this arrangement.
