MOUNT SOMMERS GOSSIP

(FBOU OUB OWN COBBESPONDENT.)

A meeting of the Mount tiomars School Committee took place on Wedneahay last. This being the last meeting of the present Committee before the election of a new one, the finanoiat poaition was reviewed. It was ascertained that there was a fair balance m the bank. The master's monthly report shewed 44 children to be on the rol), with an average attendance of 90 per cent. It was resolved to apply to the Board of Education for a pupllteaoher, and to give a weelr's holidays (o the children.

While cheokfng stationers accounts, previous to the Committee's meeting, the schoolmaster found tbe following entry : ''Two b xesof Slatepencilß, Is 4d, carriage, 9d." Did the stationer engage an express wapgon to take this heavy parcel to the r< ilway station. If to, how much did tbe driver charge, and how muoh the goods olerk 1 Or did the latter charge only 9d for transmission of 16d worth of goods over a distance of twentyfour miles? I so. It seems evident that suoh a valualle Government servant is entitled to promotion, for he has shown great aptitude m conjuring the public's money out of their pcokets.

There are now two threshing machines busy at wi rk m the district. The splendid weather and the moonlit nights enable their employees to continue their work almost uninterruptedly by day and night. The yield is supposed to be very fair. On Friday, ths nintb, a ooncert m connection with the Mount Somera Band of Hope took place. There was a large audience. A number of items m vocal and instrumental music, recitations and readings, were contributed. The recitations were particularly good, but I hope that the readers whom favored the audienoe with "selections will not take it m had parts, if I suggest to them that they read fir too quickty to impress their hearera favoursbly.
