One of the men deputed to assassinate the Emperor was directed by the Secret League to carry a bottle of poison under his clothing, resting upon his bosom. A second emissa/y was deputed to watch the intended assassin m the event of the latter's courage failing. His comrade was to smash the bottle, and procure the death of his tellow-conspirator. His Majesty was passing through the park when he was fired at and the shot but narrowly missed its aim. The assailant, who is stated to be an officer m the Russian army, was arrested on the spot.
