THE JUBILEE CROWN PROPOSAL

This is wbatjthe ''New Zealand Timea" has to s»y on the above subject :— Of all the numerous silly and childish suggestions that have been made as to the celebration of the Queen's Jubilee, the most utterly imbecile proposal comes from Melbourne and was mentioned m ytisterday's telegrams. It is that all the Australian colonies should " join m presenting to her Majesty a crown made of colonial ?old, and studded with fifty diamonds to represent the years of her reign. " We sincerely truit and believe that the colonies will not for one moment entertain the idea of doing anything bo absolutely aennelesa and uaeless. Tbe Queen has already quiet a museum of oiO*ur,far more than she tnows what to do with, or than she oan ever wear. Indeed seeing that her Mrjesty never will wear a crown at all nowadays, notwithstanding the frequent hints that something else is- to bo desired Id the way cf regal robes at a pu lio oeremoaial than "a rusty black drees and bonnet," we really do not sea what she could do with tbe foolish bauble propound to be sent to her from tbe Antipodes, save to add it to the glittering collection of similar toys shut up m that cago at the Tower and shown to London sightseers. It is am* zing that people can bo found empty-headod and weak-minded enough to make snob a suggestion. Surely there are brains enough m Australasia to devise ■ome better memorial of the Royal Jubilee than so grow % piece of torn*
