The Rev Father Chastagnon will celebrate mass at Rakaia on Sunday next, at 10.30 a.m.; Vespers at Ashburton at the usual hour.
The Evangelistio addresses of Mr Duncan Wright were continued this week, the attendance on Monday evening being very good indeed. Mr Wright gave a short address on churoh work, and also sang a solo " Come " with ohorus by the choir and audience, prayer was given by Messrs Sawle and Wilson, Rev D. MoNicoll, and others. Mr Wright then text " What think ye of Christ," and after very earnestly addressed the people from the another solo the j second meeting was held, to which a great proportion of the audience remained, and several enquirers gave evidence of the good effeot of the services on them. Last night's meeting took the form of a thanksgiving service and also as a farewell one to Mr Wright, the churoh being comfortably filled and a very large number remaining to the close of the second meeting. Several present engaged m prayer, and Mr Wright's address was listened to most attentively, and regret expressed that the services could not be further oontinued this week, but as Mr Wright had to go to Flemington, to-day this could not be, but a very hearty welcome would undoubtedly be given him if he could again visit Ashburton m the future.
We are requested to oall the attention of farmers and flookowners to the announcement m another column that a publio trial of the merits of "Brooke's Perfeot Sheep Dip " will take place, under the auspices of a Committee appointed by the Direotora of the Chertsoy Baleyarda Company, at the Company'B Dip on Friday next.
Qlt is reported that magnificent underground |oaves, covering an area of several square miles, and little, if anything, inferior to the Jenolan or Fish Biver Caves, have been discovered on private property at Bungendore, New South Wales.
The libel action against the " Dunedin Evening Star " m whioh Mr J. W. Robinson, arohiteot, claimed £50,000 damages, has resulted m a verdict for the defendant newspaper, with costs against the plaintiff amounting to £1262 105.
We understand that the residents or AHenton are arranging among thomselves to defray the expenses inourred by the Brigade m connection with Quinton's fire, failing the Upper Ashburton Boad Board so doing. This is m order that the servioes of the Brigade may not be withheld from any future fire whioh may occur m the distriot.
Mr Herbert Steels hag constructed a boat the motive power of whioh is supplied by paddles, propelled, by means of an ingenious arrangement, by hand. Both the woodwork and ironwork of the boat, whioh is about sixteen feet m length, are entirely Mr Steele'B handiwork, and a trial which was held m the Domain two or three evenings ago was very satisfactory.
A woman named Julie Watoh, thirty-six years of age, has been found dead m her bed m a house m the Itue Vielle des Carmelites, at Limoges, the cause of her death having been starvation. In a money-bag between the mattress and palliasses upon whioh she was lying was deposited a sum of £1000 m geld and silver.
Particulars of the census of the Frenoh population, taken m May last, have just been made public. They give a total of 38,218,903, being an increase of only 546,855 on the population of 1881. Paris now contains 2,344,550 inhabitants. In 32 departments there has been an actual deorease. There are 54 cities m Franoe with a population exceeding 30,000, but only 49 communes containing more than 20,000 inhabitants eaoh.
The high cost of the magnesium light, which has been a serious obstaole to its oommon use, is removed by a new German prooess, which has reduced the price from £8 to £1 10s a pound, with a prospect of still further cheapening. A wire of moderate size equals the light of seventy-five stearine candles ; the oost is now but little more than gas ; no expensive works or street mains are required, and it is absolutely safe. It is predicted that m five years the light will be as familiar as the electric light of to-day.
The Sydney "Evening News" estimates that New South Wales must import three million bushels of wheat this year to keep her bread-basket fall.
The " Auoklaud Bell " says that a Miss Fearon, of Motuera, has opened, almost entirely at her own expense, a cottage home for friendless and parentleas Protestant children. She has already 16 inmates.
One of the largest apples we have ever seen is now m Mr H. M. Carson's shop window. It was grown by Mr J. R. Chapman, of this town, and weighs lib lOioz. The tree was purchased from Mr Smith, gardener.
A very severe attack of ophthalmia has broken out among the cattle and sheep at Dandenong Creek, Yiotoria. Many animals afflicted with it have beoome totally blind. The disease is contagious among cattle and sheep. . ,
An Auokland exohange states that notwithstanding the dull times and the eodlin moth, a settler at Wainui, beyond the Wade, has made £150 by the sale of fruit this season.
Henry Wiseman, a fisherman, lies m great agony from the effeotß of the Bting of a katipo or poißonoua spider which he encountered at the mouth of the Hutt.
Aooording to the " Auckland Herald " Mr Courtenay, who has four aores of land near Auokland m vinery and orohard, states that he clears at least £1000 a year from his fruit alone.
The 28kh February (says the " Mount Ida Chroniole ") was a rather ominous date m the life of the late Mr Maoandrew; He was deolared (Superintendent of Otago on 28th Feb., 1867; Mrs Macandrew died on 28th Feb., 1875 ; and Mr Macandrew was buried on 28th February, 1887.
