SIR W. F. D. JERVOIS ON DEFENCES.
Dunedin, Maroh 31. The Governor opened the new Garrison Hall at Port Chalmers this af tern oi n, In his remarks he said they mmt remember that the defence of New Zealand was a naval defenoe, and it depended on lines of communication at sea. Bat m connection with that defence, aid supporting and forming portion of It, was the protection of the ports of Port Chalmers, Lyttelton, Wellington, and Auokland. If these were not protected the result would be that a naval squadron would have to operate for their protection instead of looking out for the enemy at sea on lines of communication where we should be met. The defences of these ports was therefore part and parcel of the naval defence of the colony, and the volunteers at these ports existed to protect them, as they were the nuoleus of naval defence, and at the same time a great eoaroe of wealth to the colony.
