A depu atl>n from the Industrial Association watted upon Mr Balance to-day, to see if the Government would contribute £1 for £1 if a company were formed for the purpose of erecting a plant to make raw or refined sugar from beetroot ; tbe Government contribution not to exceed £2000, to be chargeable against the bonus offered by Parliament for the manufacture of the first ICOO tons of beet Bugar produced, to enable tbe Company to Baocced In manufact tring that amount by the new process lately discovered, The plant would < O3t £3000 to £40C 0. Mr Bail an cc said the idea had his full sympathy ; he wm m favor of protecting this industry and all other colonial industries Tbe subj'ot of fostering the manufacture of preserved fruit, jam, oornflonr, and starch W&0 gone into, and Mr Balance was assured that 600 women and girls could be- employed if these industries "Were proteoted. As to preserved milk, Mr Ballance said he believed Mr J. C. Firth intended manufacturing it at Matanaka. He prom'aed that all the matters should have tbe Government's favorable oonideratlon.
