Fire Caused by a Locomotive. Mastkrton, February 24. A railway engine yesterday caused * fire, destroying grain stacks, valued at £350 the property of R. Campbell. Wellington, February 24. Mr Ballanco goes to a Korero. Mr Bailance intends to attend the great meeting of the Ngapahl and Arawa trtbee at Waitangi on Marob 7th. It is expected to be the largest meeting ever held north of Auckland. The matters to toe dfeoatied are tribal questions. . Expiration of Parliament. There seems to be a doubt as to the exact date of ihe termination of the Par* Hament. It is usually supposed to ba August 4, but It ia not dear whether It does not exist till December 19. Meat Preserving Company. At the annual meeting of the Wellington Meat Preserving and Refrigerating Company, the balance sheet showed a loss of £204 on the year's transactions. The Chairman regretted the unsatisfactory oharaoter of the -report, and attributed . the position to the high prlos paid for the concern at the commencement. Re« f erring to the meat sent Home to the Exhibition, he said they oould not even get the prloe of the casks, let alone tip meat. . Wellington Cemetery. A Committee of Newton residents have' reported against the purchase of the Oemetary site at Melrone, and express Ihe opinion that it would be a scandalous waste of public money if decided on by the City Council. Dunjsdiw, February 24. ' At tbe Fire Brigades Conference to-day requests were received from Kelson and Ohristchuroh to hold next year's demons* trations at those plaoes. By the Chair* man's casting vote Ohrfstehurch was selected. Captain Mltohtll of Port Chalmers was elected President, Captain : Page, Wellington, and Lieutenant Smith.
