Auckmnd, February 22. Two hundred summonses have been issued for non-payment of property-tax overdue. Walter Egginton, a seaman, has been arrested at Papakura gumfiolds for assaulting a gumdigger named James Scott, and breaking his leg. Fggington was Caffrey's mate, nnd was to have sailed on tho memorable trip of the Sovereign of tho Seas, bat got involved m a stabbing caeo. Wellington, February 22. Numerous burglaries and attempted burglaries have been reported, and to-day three others occurred. An undoubted gang of questionable characters are m town. An unoccupied eight-roomed house at Johnaonville, owned by Mr R. Bould, has been destroyed by a busli fire. A large quantity of grass, fences, and timber m the district have been destroyed. At Puhnutanui bush fires are alsa raging, and numerous outhouses, haystacks, and fencing have been destroyed. While expressing approval of the Wellington fortifications, so far as he has yet been able to visit, them, Admiral Tryon is of opinion that the electric light at Fort Ballance is placed at too great an elevation, as rays from the reflector when thrown down from a height of about 120 feet leave a dnrk spaco underneath beyond the area covered by the light, and although the light may be moved about searching, it is still possible that a boat might creep across without being seen. Nelson, February 22. On Saturday morning a man named George Carr wcis found dead m his bed. He lived at Takaka, and on the previous day bad been out fishing m Golden Bay, and retired to his bed m his usual health. The cauae of death was heart disease. •
