HORRIBLE DISCOVERY IN A CATHEDRAL

In the prosecution of repairs now being effected on the cathedral at Panama a singular discovery has been made. In the third story of one of the bell towers a doorway la being formed from what was formerly a wide and long opening serving to give exit to the sound of the bells. The lintel of this opening was formed of solid masonry work, cemented over. On Its removal it was found that at some period long antecedent, fifty or perhaps one hundred years ago, a portion of this cement work had been removed, and a child of from perhaps nine to eighteen months of age had been thrust In there alive. Its little wrists and feet were closely tied together, and from the manner m which the hands were clutched and the feet twisted, it is evident the sufferer had died m the utmost torture.
