Fitzherbert, Speaker of the .Legislative Ouuncil has received twelve months leave of absence on full pr»y, nud leaves for England almost immediately. Fitzherbert haß this morning received a letter from th« Premier asking him to act along with others to be appointed on behalf of New Zealand at the Imperial Conference. Bir William has accepted. Crabtree Committed for Trial. Orabtree was this morning committed for trial on two charges of burglary and house-breaking. Appeal Dismissed OnHiSTOHUTtoH, February 8. In banco to-day Mr Justice Johnston gave judgment for the respondent m tha case of Porter v O'Connor, an appeal from the deoision of the Resident Magistrate, Ohrlstohnrob, m respect to bookmakers betting totallaator odds. Costs, £10, were awarded against Porter. Lieutenant Andrews. Lieutenant Andrews, whose orders to join the Essex regiment were countermanded, has received orders to join the seoond battalion of the Devonshire Regiment (the old eleventh) m India. Timatu Harbor BoardTimaru, Febiuary 9 The Harbor Board met to-day. Tli3 annual report and balance sheet showed that the unexpended biilance of the 1886 loan amounted to £81,248 8s 2d, and the unexpended balance on general account to £265 Us Od. This statement has been submitted to the Board's auditor, and ngreed to by him. These balunces will, therefore, be the ones carried forward to each account for 1887. The unallotted balance of the 1886 loan is £63,023 2s 6d remaining at the Bonrd's disposal for future works. The auditor, Mr Ollivier, m reporting on the accounts, characterised the system of bookkeeping adopted by the Secretary, Mr Tennant, as perfect, and fit to bo a modol for all Boards. lie the accident to the Norman McLeod the captain states that no blame is attributable to anyone, or to any defects m the appliances. A sudden shift of wind caused the accident, which might have occurred m any port m New Zealand . The Gilchrist Scholarship. Dtjnedin, February 9. ] Ohss. T. W.
