LOCAL AND GENERAL.
A Mr 0. Y. B. Goldie writes to the Wmn ganui Chronicle assorting that violent shooks of earthquake will be felt m New Zealand on the 18th and 14th inst.— Sunday and Monday next. A determined case of aoioidt took place at Nelson on Friday last. A -woman named Jessep, m Washington Valley, took " Bough en rats" and a quantity of arnioa. She had a comfortable home, and no reason is asiigned for tbe act. When playing with a pet dog m the afternoon, she was heard to say, " Poor fellow, you are going to lose your mistress soon." She had indulged somewhat m liquor. The following is from the Temuka Leader of the 3rd inst. :— " Yesterday about 00 head of oattle were despatched to Southland by Mr Andrew Grant. Instead of sending them by railway they are being driven along tbe road the whole way. A large drove of sheep intended for Southland is also on the road, as it ia found that it is oheaper to send them m this way than by train. It the plan we have suggested were adopted this would not be so. Our ouggeation is to inoreaia tbe QUBtoms duties, and roduce railway freights, and if that were done the colony would be much the batter foz it." The Bruce Herald denies a statement made by an O&maru paper to the effect that the Milton Pottery had been dosed. Our contemporary says : — " The pottery is not closed, but m consequence of' the warehouse being well stooked with finished goods, a few of the hands, the producers as they are flailed, are temporarily off work. Neither ib it true that the men hare only behiy working half-time for a long while past. The "special" of a contemporary says that at the recent conference between " the leaders of the Opposition " it was agreed that Mr Bryoe should lead m any attack on the Government. . It is mentioned by an exohange as an evidence of the advance of civilisation amongßt' the nativei of Tauranga distriot that the wellknown chief, Hori Ngati, has taken a private letter-box at the local post office. " What shall we name baby sister ? " asked a mother of her little four-year-old daughter. 11 Call her Early, mamma ; that's a pretty name." "Early ! That is not a little girl's name." " Oh, yes it is. Don't you remember you read to me about a little girl who was to be the May Queen, and who wanted her mother to call her Early ? " Mr C. Braddell desires to acknowledge the receipt of the following speoimens for the mußeum : — Bush eookroaches (Prinophw Retieuiaris, native name "Huhu"), from 1 Geraldine Bush, presented by Mr J. T. Summonses have been issued against several people for standing m the Theatre Boyal, Melbourne, during the performance of the pantomime, and one of the proprietors has also been summoned for permitting the same. The Waimato Times, of Saturday, says that a woman named Johnstone, whose husband left her some years ago, and who has been m pretty straightened circumstances ever since, was found at an early hour on Friday morning m a well m Harris street. Constable Graham hearing a noise as of someone orying and groaning, proceeded to the spot from whence the sounds proceeded, and found the unfortunate woman down a well nearly 30 feet deep. After some difficulty had been experienced m raising her to the surface it was found that she was very much bruised. Dr Staopoole was summoned and attended to her, and m the morning she was removed to the hospital. For a time past she kas been m reoeipt of oharitable aid, and her circumstances were not. of the brighest order. The Southland Times remarks that despite Protection the fall m the value of hnd m Germany is as marked as with us. Thus lately m the district of Kcenigsberg a State farm whioh a few years before had been sold for 40,700 marks, was recently disposed of for 82,000 marks. Similar reductions m (Value are common m Meoklenburg, where | the reductions m rent range from 15 to 40 I per cent. A large nugget was unearthed at West Dunolly, Viotoria, last week on private property belonging to a Mr (White, but which had been worked for some considerable time# The nngget weighed m the rough 4190z5. It was a large piece of quartz impregnated with gold, and, after being treated at the Mint, realised 2600zs 12dwts of the preoious metal. The following paragraph is from the South Canterbury Tines : — Conscientious men do not always measure their words. At a oertain hotel m Dunedin, during the reoent murder trial, two medicos from Canterbury met at the dinner table. One was merely a visitor, the other a witness who had jußt testified* Unto him the visitor— " Witness, you have just committed perjury, sir ; and you know it, fir I " American Co.
