A oablegram received by the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agenoy Company states that the annual meeting was held m London on February 4. The profit was £47,880, and a dividend and bonus was deolared at the rate of 1 5 per cent per annum, while there was carried forward £3625 and to reserve £5000. At the annual meeting of the Auckland On Company a dividend at the rate of 17 percent was declared on the paid up •hares. An old woman, named Mrs Foley, wife of— Poley, a bookbinder, fell into the fire and was nearly roasted alive. She is m the Hospital, and her life 1b despaired of, Gisbobnb, February 7. Chlisp and Muir have been committed for trial for an alleged criminal libel, brt are admitted to bail m their own recognisances. A charge requiring them to be bound over to keep the peace was die missed. Wellington, February 7. A meeting of the Cabinet was htld at Bir Julius Vogel's residence to-day. It was attended by Hit Julius Yogel, Sir B. Stout, Mr Ballance, Mr Tole, Mr Buokley, and Mr Richardson, 'ihe queation of the delegates to the Imperial Conference wai fieoly discussed, but nothing was defmiely eettled, but it will be finally decided to-morrow. Other matters which had accumulated dating the absence of the Minis; era wore disonused, but nothing was made public. The names of (Sir Robert Stout Bn.i Major Atkinson are freely mentioned m town aa likely to go to London to represent New Zealand.

The girl came from Blenheim. Willie Walker, a youth of seventeen, whilst trying to cr< as the river at Oollingwood on Sunday night, was drowned. He was riding on a horse and leading another, but there was a flood m the river. The horse was found on Monday, aod nt four o'clock the body was found. In excavating for a drain on the Waimea road m the city, s> thin seam of coal was found, which haß widened about •lght inches. Westport, February 7. An accident occurred to the son of Captain Riley on Saturday. The lad was, witll others, playing with a floating log m the surf, and when running away he fell And the log rolled over him. He received •ome nasty bruises, the most serious being an injury to his groin, He had a narrow eicape, but a fatal result is not now feared. Buller County 1b taking the necessary measures to raise a loan of £6000, under the Looal Bodies Loans Act. Dunedin, } tbruary 7 At the City Council to-night the Finance Committee reported that only £3200 was available for city works, which last jear cost £10.204. This was mainly due to the large contribution required for charitable ad, amounting to -£3200. The Committee were of opinion that at no distant date there would have to be a speoial rate for charitable aid purposes With the view of lessening the annual charge of heavy interest on the overdraft, they recommended that legislative power ba sought to allow money to be received on fixed deposits. The report, which provoked a long discussion, was finally adopted, most of the Oounoillora being of opinion that a speoial rate for charitable aid would be unavoidable next year.
As an instance of the profit on dairy farming, it ib stated that a farmer, who leased 150 acres of the Edendale estate, with a purchasing clause, the Company giving him the use of 40 oowb on paying 10 per cent of the prioe until able to buy them, has, m the first six months, paid the full year's rent, and purchased twenty of tha cows.
At the RM. Court to-day three persons recovered damages to the extent of about £5 from the Corporation, for injury to their property by the escape of the fames from the gasworks, turning the paint outside black, and injuring picture-frames, Ac, inside.
