it : ♦ : The annual dinner In connection with , the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade [ * was held at the Somerset Hotel last i* evening. The members attended m good 0 numbers, Captain Scott presiding. There were present as goeets : The Mnyor, Ex. Captain Oaygill, Deputy-Superintendent Miles, of the Western Brigade, and Mr W. B. Mobs, Captain of the Fire Police The excellent spread and the tasteful arrangement of the tables reflected great cr<d t on Host Pattman, and it goes without saying that the viands received their due Bhare of attention. Ihe proceedings, which were kept up with vigor till the morning had well advanced, were of a most enjoyable character throughout. Apologies for non«atfondance were received from Mr A. Harrison, SHperintendent Fooks, of the Western Brigade, and Lieutenant Dolman. The usual lo>al and patriotio toasts having been duly honored, Captain Scott proposed, " The Mayor and Borough Council of Ashburton. He ■poke favorably of the energy and ability of the 'City Fathers," and expressed a hopa that the present good feeling which i existoi between the Council and the Fire j Brignde would long continue. The Mayor responded, and m returning ' thanks said the Borough Counoil would always meet the wishes of the Brigade as ' far at practicable. He was glai at the ' existence of the present good feeding, and i that everything was working smoothly, < proof of this being afforded by the fact J that there bad been no meeting of the Council's Fire Brigade Committee for a long time past. It any question should arise as between the Brigade and the Counoil, lie would ask them to make all due allowance for any ao ion the latter might take, for they must remember that that body had its duty to perform to the burgesses. Foreman Quape proposed, " The Fir« Brigade Committee of the Borough Council," and m doing io bore oat the remarks of previous speakers at to the ' satisfactory manner m which matters between the Council *nd the Brigade now stood. There had been only one little hitch since the formation of the Brigade, and that had speedily been got over. I The Mayor briefly responded. Foreman Baker proposed, "The Western Fire Brigade," coupling the ( toast with the names of Deputy-Buperin- •' tendent Miles, Firemen Dunn and Paul, * •11 of whom responded. The Mayor proposed, " The Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade." He highly 1 ealogised the present brigade for the efihienoy it h&d acquired during the short time that bad elapsed since its formation.
