FIRE AT GREENSTREET.

(FROM OUR OWN OOIitJBSrOWDBNT.) A firn broke out near the blacksmith's, hop, Greeuetreet, on last Wednesday afternoon, which at first threatened to bt a source of severe loss, if not rain, to some of the neighboring farmer* ; and it ■eems clear that suoh would bare bean the oase, had not Mr Jamei Oliver, fortunately, been threshing hit wheat near by at the time v and discovered the fire immediately after it started. He at ono« stepped w rk, and m company with hii plucky staff, directed their nttnost efforts to hem m and subdue the fl tmei, but eren with the additional assittance of ■everal ue'irhborf this was not ficcomplished till after considerable damage had been done to fences and feed belonging to Messrs Sutherland, Oreen, Gray, and Aoderson.' The last-named gentleman had some wheat and oati burnt, also hi* stockyard and pig-sties, and was very nearly lor Ing his homestead besides Tht high wind carried the fire along to rapidly that very prompt notion was. necessary to keep it at all within bounds. Fortunately, Mr Oliver's water-cart wu jatt returning with a fresh supply for the engine. It was m charge of "Sonny" the German, who, when be saw the smoke, drove with commendable judgment direct to the fire, at a speed equal to that of the flying artillery of his gteat nation. Previous to the arrival of the water-oarr, Mrs D. Oliver and Miss Hale did good srticß m assisting to bring water m buckets, and afterwards In looking after and preventing baok fires from springing np again. Tour correspondent is informed that Mr T. Jones on having the bag he was using to beat oat the fltmei burnt t« ashes, took his ooat, and laid on with it like a true Briton while a rag of it held together. I may say that although the fire started near the blackemith't sbf'p, it is known that it was not oaused by anyone oonneoted with that establishment. Wednesday was rather an eventful day at Greenntreet. Just a few hours befora the fire took place, Mr Oliver left the* field with his traction engine to help Mr Sutherland 1 * out of a creek, where It had gone to take m water, and by some mishap had got bogged.
