THE BELLS

The Alleyne-Wade Comedy Company pUyad to a good house at the Oddfellows* Hall last oveninz, and gave a really -xcellent performance, the pieces presented being “ The Bella ” and “ The fl'ugh Diamond.” The first-named afforded an opportunity to Mr Alleyne to display his unquestionable ability as an *o or, living’s great rdle of the Burgomaster falling to bis share. The part is one »bich makes great demand upon the performer, the whole interest of the niece focussing in him as its central figure, and Mr Al’eyne sustained it admiraby, giving a most realistic interpretation of the dream-haunted murderer. The tableaux representing the burgomaster’s vision of his victim, the Polish Jew, and his dream of his trial and execution, followed by bis death as the result of the terrors of his conscience, were excellent, and evoked well-deserved applause Miss Wade made a charming Annette, and Miss Marion Medley as the Burgomaster’s wife, Miss Lilly* Bryer as the seivaot-maid, Messrs Power and Melville as the convivial friends of the Burgomaster, and Mr Beaumont as Christian, all deserve a word praise. The afterpiece was an appropriate contrast, and evoked much genuine amusement, Harry Power as “ Cousin Joe” being simply irresistible. Altogether the company gave a capital entertainment.
