POVERTY BAY.

The Government, says th? Poverty Pay Herald, have under consideration the changing of the name “ Poverty Bay,’ bo Inappropriately bestowed by Captain Cook upon this district. Captain Cook may have had very good reasons for the designation, on the score of not being able to obtain firewood »ad wa f er; but residents have for more reason for desiring a change, as these necessaries are not now so scarce a thev were at the time of Cook s call ‘‘Poverty Bay” has an ominous sound, •nd is » libel on the district so f» tide in its resources. The very name has had a good deal to do with regarding the progress of the bay, for it haa been the means of deterring mffny outaida people from settling amongst us. . This may seem strange, but nevertheless it is a fact that many times has it been said by outside people the very affix carries with r poverty and starvation. Of coarce those who have already thrown in the*r lot with ns know that the name does not in any way affect the fertility of the district, bait i* with others who know nothing about ont riches that the word “poverty” carries with it a deterrent effect. The application is made under the 12th section of the Land Act, 1885, which gives the Governor power to a ter the name of any district, end it is to be hoped a mote appropriate affix will be made shoitly.
