In a ease in Court to-day in which a lad was charged with over-driving a cow, evidence was given for the prosecution that the animal was streaming with perspiration. The defence gravely attributed this circumstance to there having been an unusually heavy dew on the night on which the offence was alleged to have been committed. The Magistrate could not accept this theory, and reminded the defence that they had over-estimated the capacity of the Court , to absorb “ tall ” stories. Accounts amounting to £lO6 10s 4d were passed for payment and the Board adjourned till January 3rd, 1886. The English parcel-post seems to be improving by leaps and bounds. It was only started three years ago, and ths number of parcels carried during the first year waa fifteen millions. Last year the number was doubled, being thirty millions, or an increase of 100 per cent. In London alone 700 men are employed in the parcels department of the Post Office.

During a thunderstorm at Wangaratta, on Nov. 12, the lightning struck a tree beneath which five drovers had camped. On Saturday a meeting of the Mount Somers Public Sports Oommiteee took place. Present—Messrs Potts, Harvey, Morrison, Hood, and Peache. Mr Peaohe was in ths chair. The minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed, and the following appointments were resolved upon:—For the horse racing—Judge, A. Peaohe; starter, D. H. Potts; clerk of the scales, E. F. Wright < bandicappers, A. Harvey, O. Morrison, and D. H. Potts. For the athletics—Clerk of the course, A. Harvey; starter, A. Maofarlane ; bandicappers, W. Edson and A. Maofarlane. The athletic programme was next arranged, subject to alterations hereafter. The action of the Chairman in matters of detail was approved of, and the meeting adjourned. The sub-division of large estates is said to bejgoing on rapidly in the western districts o ; Victoria.
