AUSTRALIANS r. CANTERBURY Christchdkch, November 26. The encounter between Canterbury and Australia commenced at Lancaster Park at 12 30 p m. c tc-day. Wilton, captain of the local men, won the toss from Garret, and went ta the wickets. The first two men who batted made a good stand, and scored 48 before Wi ding hit his wicket in trying to drive Trumble. Crawshaw ont 20, and was cleverly stomped by Jarvis, who kept the wickets after the luncheon adjournment, Biackham having the gloves previously. Miiton played fist rate cricket, treating all the bowlers with impunity, and playing his usual “ stonewall" game He was especially hard on Spoff jrth, whom he repeatedly cut for twos, threes, and fours Bar. es and E. Cotcerill also played well. The lat'er got fairly well on to one of fipofforth’s deliveries, and hit the ball 100 yards before it pitched. The fielding of the visitors was not good, some of the men mulling the picking up. The Australians lost one wicket before scoring, and have 2 tans up tor the loss of one wicket.
