The discharged warders of the Asylum have been replaced by fresh men. Matters are now going on quietly and satisfactorily
The Auckland Gardeners’ Horticultural Society's Spring Show was held in the Agricultural Hall. The display of vegetables were poor, the Chinese having nearly crushed out cottage gardening. A meeting of the Highway Boards of Eden County was held t -day, for the purpose of electing representatives on the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. Some extraordinary statements were made by several members present. Among other things It was stated that in one case a widow who was assessed, for the purpose of rating, at £630, was the recipient of relief. la another case, also that of a widow, the recipient is said to be oyfner of a freehold of seven or eight acres near Auckland, a nice house, and several milch cows—in fact quite a complete homestead worth hundreds of pounds. In a third case, again a widow, it is stated she had a fon and daughter in a fair position in Auckland, and she her elf had a nicely furnished house, and amongst her “lares and penatas ” was a piano. On the “ relief ” of these cases, which are of long standing, it is laid about £7OO have been wrongfully expended. It was als o pointed out ! hut >f these oases had been referred by the relieving authorities to the local bodies for investigation, large sums of money might have been saved to the country. At a meet’ng of the Harbor Board today the subject of a leader that appeared in the Otago Daily Times, with reference to the harbor, wia discussed, and a letter from the Board’s solicitor was read, in which the statements in the leader were characterised as libellous, inasmuch as they were untrue, atld cal minted to do the Board harm It was, however, after dis cushion, d cided to give the Times an oppntunity of rectifying the misstatemeats before proceeding further in the matter.
