An attempt is being made by the Q eenB'teet storekeepers to break down the drapers Thursday half-holiday, and a number kept open to-day At a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce on goldfields matters, after a general discussion, the following resolutions were carried :—“That. the opinion of this meeting, the goldfields appropriation for the current year Is unjust to the North Island, and this meeting respectfully requests the Minister of Mines to make such an allocation oat of the money at his d’sposal as will enable local governing bodies to otrry out Important neo ssary wsrk ; and that th i Minister of Mines be requested to famish the Chamber of Commerce with a statement as to the balance of £6700 unexpended and to be appropriated, and how much Is available for the province on the same conditions as grants to the Sooth Island goldfields Napian, November 18. Dunedin, Novombsr 18 Samuel Gallon, a man employed as a stoker on an engine working at the Otago Heads, wrs to day charged at the Police Court with giving tobacco to a prisoner, contrary to section 33 of the Prisons Act. The Gaoler raid a quantity of tobacco had been found in the possession of prisoners, but they had been hitherto unable to discover how it was obtained. Accused addmitted the charge, and the Resident Magistrate said tbit although It wai a fkst offence it could not be dealt with lightly, and inflicted a fine of £5 A further charge against the accused of oouvey’ng a letter from one of the prisoned was dismissed on a technical ground.
