After a long discussion the Borough Council last evening resolved to avail itself of the provisions of the Local Bodies Loans Act, and apply to Government for a loan of £2500. The original proposal was that the Council should make application for £3OOO, about half of which was to be devoted towards paying off the overdraft, and the remainder towards works specified. Crs Williamson, Harrison, and Reid deprecated the principle of borrowing, and were therefore antagonistic to the proposal. It was pointed out by the Mayor and Cr Thomas that the interest on the money proposed to be borrowed would be only 5 per cent, against 8J per cent, paid at present on the overdraft. The other Councillors were favorable to borrowing sufficient to pay off the Council’s present liabilities, and thus gain the advantage of paying a lower rate of interest. It appeared that the liabilities amount to over £2OOO including overdraft, and amount remaining unpaid on traffic bridge and pound, and a proposal fixing the amount to be borrowed at £2500 was carried on the casting vote of the Mayor, after a number of other amendments had been advanced and lost.
